The aircraft carrier deck crew wore N-1 deck jackets during World War II and the Korean War. The thick cotton shell and alpaca or wool lining gave the deck crew the needed warmth and protection from the elements during extreme cold weather conditions. US Navy produced the initial series in Navy blue to symbolize the Navy before changing to Khaki.
The US Navy developed three “N” systems. In addition to the cold climate N-1, the N-2 system for rainy and the N-3 system for tropical conditions. Despite these climate divisions, old photographs indicate sailors rarely used these systems according to regulations, opting instead to mix and match to suit their layering need and preferences.
This is a reproduction of the 1940s US Navy 3rd Type N-1 Deck Jacket. This version has no wool on the cuffs, no gun belt under the arm, contract number NXSX 70201.

Quality jacket made in China. I would recommend all of BRONSON's products!
Quality jacket. Good looking. Like the one I had in the Navy
Bought this coat on a whim. Very surprised on the high quality material that are used. When you put it on you could feel its a very warm jacket.
An exceptionally warm, high quality jacket at a very good price, would definitely purchase from Bronson again.
I am 5’10”, 172 pounds, 40” chest, 31” waist, fairly broad shoulders and I went with a size 42. I can layer with a sweater underneath. I would not have been able to go with a size 40. I went with the olive color and got a compliment right away when I put the jacket on in the office. It’s heavy duty and warm! Note because it’s true to the original design there are no interior pockets. No flaps on pockets, no zippers. Old school. On a ship these jackets were not carrying smart phones! Delivery took about 2 weeks which is not bad at all given that this was shipped with supply chain issues, Covid winding down and the war in Ukraine underway. I would highly recommend!
I used the sizing chart on the site and went with a size 40 which is usually my size in jackets . When I received the jacket and tried it on , the jacket fit perfect . The quality is top notch and felt extremely heavy duty , probably one of the warmest jackets that I own . Will buy again .
The jacket is well constructed. The material is heavy, and machine stiches are well done. In terms of sizing. I'm about 5 feet 7 inches tall, and 154lbs. I normally wear a size 40 short suit jacket with the sleeves shorten by 1/2 to 3/4 inches. Example, a BrooksBrothers 1818 suit, Milano fit size 40 short, with the sleeves shorted by 1/2 inch. OR a BrooksBrothers Regent fit 15.5 inch collar, 32 inch sleeve. I ordered the size 38 USN 3rd type N-1 Woolen Deck Jacket. It fits like a size 40 short jacket (BrooksBrothers Regent fit ie not too loose, not too tight...just perfect) It will get my tailor to shorten the sleeves by 1/2 inch. Overall design, I give it 5 stars out of 5 stars! Its the best replica of a genuine 1940s United States Navy N-1 jacket. I recall seeing a similar type jacket for sale on the Orvis site...but at twice the price. Order this jacket...you will NOT BE disappointed. P.S. This jacket is perfect for a Canadian fall or early spring.
A cool jacket!
The color is good, but I think it's a little long.
For other buyers, it would be better to enjoy the taste of n-1 than to order in a too large size.
I wear it very often in winter. Warmer than padding.
I'm very happy with this purchase. I have been wearing it since I received it
here is my nice "salt water" bleached Bronson Demotex N-1 in olive,
modified with a real brown mouton collar.
Correct size (always check with the Bronson team). Not snug, not roomy, I wear it with a poloshirt and a sweater. It's well made, warm, comfortable.
I'm 180cm and 77kg.
Great quality great fit
Great fit and quality as per usual with Bronson.
The jacket fits fine. I needed the 44r the
42 probably would have fit but I went with
my gut feeling the 44 would fit and I’m
very happy with it.
Couldn’t be happier with this jacket. Perfect reproduction of the Deck Jacket and excellent quality. Im 174cm / 67kg, I usually wear a medium 38 but sized up for a 40 - fits perfect.
