The name “Tiger Stripe” derives from the camouflage’s slender black streaks, resembling the markings of a tiger. Evolving from a blend of French Lizard and British Denison patterns, it emerged in the late 1950s when the Republic of Vietnam Marine Corps adopted it.

By the early 1960s, Tiger Stripe gained favor among U.S. military advisors—particularly Special Forces personnel working alongside South Vietnamese units—cementing its place as one of the most distinctive combat patterns of the Vietnam era.
