In 1941, the U.S. Army introduced the first-generation HBT uniform. The 1942 second-generation version added thigh cargo pockets to the P.Q.D. No.42B trousers.

In 1943, to counter the threat of chemical warfare, a gas-proof flap was added, creating the C/D variants. These uniforms were used alongside the USMC version in the Pacific theater and remained in service until the Korean War.
