Shirts with reinforced patches on the shoulders and back date back to the late 19th century, designed as durable work pullovers. The “cigarette pocket” design first appeared in 1929, commonly referred to as the “Flyer” pocket. The name comes from the way the pocket’s bottom can be pushed upwards to release cigarettes. By the 1930s, a new type of shirt emerged, combining ventilation holes with the cigarette pocket for improved functionality.
